What is it actually worth?

Two answers, depending on why you are asking. A free auction estimate tells you what a piece is likely to bring. A formal appraisal is a documented opinion of value prepared for a specific intended use, such as insurance, estate administration, federal tax matters or equitable distribution.

Most people arrive asking for an appraisal when what they want is an estimate, or the other way round. The difference matters, and it changes what it costs.

What it is
A researched, written opinion of value with supporting documentation and photographs, signed by a qualified appraiser.
What you get
A formal document an insurer, executor, accountant, attorney, the IRS or a court will accept.
What it takes
Physical inspection in most cases, plus research time proportional to the number of items.
Use it for
Insurance, estates and probate, charitable donations, divorce, business dissolution.

Residential contents is one of Charles’s specialties. For a full household, an estate in probate, or a business winding down, we inspect and catalog on site — a residence, a warehouse or a business premises anywhere in North Georgia and the Southeast.

What is the difference between an auction estimate and an appraisal?

An auction estimate is our opinion of what a piece will bring at sale, based on research and years of selling similar items. It is free and it is not a formal document. A formal appraisal is a researched, written opinion of value with supporting documentation and photographs, signed by a qualified appraiser — the kind an insurer, an executor, the IRS or a court will accept.

Do you need to see the item in person?

For a free auction estimate, usually not — good photos are enough to start. A formal appraisal generally requires physical inspection, and for a household or a collection we come to you.

How is a professional appraisal billed?

At $195 per hour. Before starting we will give you a realistic sense of the hours involved based on how many items there are and what they are. There is no charge to ask.

Will you appraise something and then offer to buy it?

No. A certified appraiser cannot have a financial interest in the property being appraised — that is a conflict of interest, and it is one of the reasons the ISA designation exists. If you would rather sell than insure, consign it and the auction estimate is free.

Can you appraise a whole house?

Yes. Residential contents is one of Charles’s specialties, and full-household appraisals for estates and divorces are routine work here.

How long does an appraisal take?

It depends on the number of items and how much research each one needs. We will give you a timeframe up front, and if there is a probate or filing deadline, tell us and we will work to it.

Is the appraisal accepted by the IRS?

Charitable donation and estate appraisals are written and formatted to meet IRS requirements. If your accountant or attorney has a specific format in mind, send it over before we start.
